Four Easy Alternatives to Credit Cards (And How to Verify PayPal with Them)

Four Easy Alternatives to Credit Cards (And How to Verify PayPal with Them)

Mar 26, 12 • In Getting Paid

For Pinoy freelancers, credit cards (and the process of applying for one) is a huge pain in the butt.

Banks usually award these shiny square things to employees with stable monthly incomes, loyal clients, and businesspeople. If you don’t have proof of income to show, or if the bank reps think you don’t have the capacity to pay on time, they won’t hesitate to reject your application or extend the processing time. And I must confess, I’m a victim of the latter.

While a credit card is convenient for PayPal verification or online shopping, there are other alternatives that freelancers can go for that are cheaper (in terms of annual fees and maintaining balances), easier to manage (online or by phone), and that won’t tempt you to spend over your budget.

For this post, I’ll share four easy, tried-and-tested alternatives to credit cards and a short step-by-step process on how to verify PayPal for each.

Unionbank EON card1. Unionbank EON (VISA) – this is a debit card/savings account that freelancers can open up easily. You can use it to verify PayPal, pay for purchases online and off, and of course deposit your earnings. Read How to Withdraw Your Earnings from PayPal to Unionbank for more information.

How to Verify Paypal using Unionbank EON:

  • Register your EON card through Unionbank’s online banking service.
  • Make sure that your Unionbank EON account has at least P200 for the verification process.
  • Add your Unionbank EON as a credit/debit card, the 3-digit CVC code at the back, and click on the Verify link to initiate the process.
  • Log in to your EON CyberAccount and locate PayPal’s EXPUSE or Expanded Use number, which is the 4-digit code needed to verify. According to Unionbank, give PayPal at most 5 days for the number to reflect in your account.
  • Enter the EXPUSE number in the space provided when verifying your PayPal account.

BPI My ePrepaid card2. BPI My ePrepaid (MASTERCARD) - this is one of BPI’s express cash cards that is designed to function similarly to a credit/debit card in that you can use it to shop online, verify accounts, etc. Registration costs P500 (renewal every 2 years), there’s no maintaining balance, and all you need are 1-2 valid ID/s and the registration form to apply for a BPI My ePrepaid account. For convenience, I suggest applying for the BPI My ePrepaid card online.

How to Verify PayPal using BPI My ePrePaid:

  • Transfer or deposit enough funds to your BPI My ePrepaid account. You can do so over the counter, via mobile, or your BPI Express Online account. In my case, I enrolled my ePrepaid card to my EOL account.
  • Add your BPI My ePrepaid as a credit/debit card and the 3-digit CVC code at the back of your card to your PayPal account. Click on the Verify link to initiate the process.
  • After 1-2 days, email myeprepaid@bpi.com.ph to request for the 4-digit EXPUSE code. Don’t forget to include your name and 16-digit card number in your email. I emailed my request around 1:30 PM and received a response 10-15 minutes after.
  • If you’ve enrolled your My ePrepaid card on your BPI Express Online account for balance inquiry, check the list of the last five transactions for the EXPUSE number.
  • Enter the EXPUSE number in the space provided when verifying your PayPal account.

Payoneer-Card3. Payoneer (MASTERCARD) - one of oDesk’s and Elance’s payment options, you can use Payoneer in the same way as Unionbank EON and BPI My ePrepaid. It’s a debit card, so you can use it to pay for purchases and PayPal verification. It’s a more expensive option though as compared to the first two (with a $2 withdrawal fee for oDesk users), but it works nonetheless.

How to Verify PayPal using Payoneer:

  • Activate your Payoneer account to be able to use it for ATM and online/offline transactions.
  • Load funds enough for the PayPal verification process.
  • Add your Payoneer card as a credit/debit card and the 3-digit CVC code at the back of your card to your PayPal account. Click on the Verify link to initiate the process.
  • Log on to your Payoneer account and retrieve the 4-digit EXPUSE number.
  • Enter the EXPUSE number in the space provided when verifying your PayPal account.

ko-kard BDO card4. Ko-kard (MASTERCARD) - Finally, we have the relatively new Ko-kard, in which one of its functions is a debit card you can use it to verify your PayPal account and for online and offline purchases. Again, there is no maintaining balance required when using this option.

How to Verify Paypal using Ko-kard:

  • With enough funds in your Ko-kard account, add your Ko-kard as a credit/debit card and the 3-digit CVC code at the back of your card to your PayPal account.
  • Click on the Verify link to initiate the process. The usual $1.95 fee will be deducted from your Ko-kard funds.
  • Contact Ko-kard customer service via email or their hotline number at 045-499-0788 to request an Excel spreadsheet or a PDF file of all the transactions made.
  • Locate the PayPal EXPUSE number and enter this into the space provided to verify your PayPal account.

What’s great about these four alternatives is that you don’t need to present proof of “stable” income in order to apply for any of these cards. You have full control of how much goes in and out of your account, you don’t need to worry about maintaining balances, and you can use it for all of your online and offline purchases. In fact, these are the benefits that convinced me to cancel and cut up my credit card.

Do you have other alternatives to credit cards in mind that you can add to this list? Share them all in the comments section below.

  1. Croz says:

just a thought, I believe applying for a ko-kard requires a credit card number, right? that means you also need to have a credit card to have it. thus, if you have the credit card, you can just use that to verify your PayPal account without having the need to apply for a ko-kard.

    • Stef G. says:

Hello, Croz. Good point, but ideally the freelancer’s Ko-kard is issued by the client since s/he is the person paying for services rendered.

      • Croz says:

ahh, yes. that might be better.

one question, for EON cards: would you suggest I use EON to verify my PayPal AND also use the bank for withdrawals, or would you recommend I use my other bank accounts for withdrawal and only use EON to verify it?

  2. Shara Mae L. Vasquez says:

Hi! I already had a EON card which I linked to my paypal account but when I tried to purchase online, my payment was not approved. How did it happen when I have enough funds deposited on my card.

    • Stef G. says:

Was it indicated in the payment page that the funds are of your PayPal account or your EON card? If the funds in your PayPal account are insufficient, that could be the cause of the error.

  3. Kimver Lee says:

Hi! So these 4 debit cards are the only cards you could verify with PayPal? How bout BDO cash card?

    • Stef G. says:

Hi, Kimver. These four cards are the ones I know of that freelancers can avail and verify PayPal with. I haven’t used the BDO cash card for this purpose, but if you have let us know. :)

  4. Michelle says:

Hi Ms. Stef :) I would like to ask which alternative can you suggest for students like me who do freelance as part-time? I need to have my paypal account verified.

  5. Menj says:

magkano po ba deduction every withdrawal from paypal to Ko-kard (MASTERCARD)? :)

    Thanks

    • Stef G. says:

Hello, Menj. Withdrawing funds from PayPal to Ko-kard isn’t possible…yet. Who knows, Ko-kard might allow this feature in the future. But in any case, this simply details how you can verify your PayPal account using the alternatives mentioned in the post. :)

  6. Susi says:

Hello there! This is a very informative post. I have a question, though. Can you withdraw Paypal funds to BPI ePrepaid? i’m planning to apply for one.

By the way, you can also use Smart Money card to verify your PayPal account, but you cannot transfer funds to it. :)

    Cheers!

    • Stef G. says:

Hi, Susi. I’m afraid it works the same way as Smart Money and the other options mentioned in this post. You can verify, but not withdraw funds to it.

    • Nanie says:

Hi! I believe you can withdraw funds from paypal straight to your smartmoney card, although it costs a little higher, 200php, I think. You’ll just need to add it as a BDO card/bank account at your paypal account :)

Thanks for such a very helpful article. I was able to verify my paypal using smartmoney and did not have any problems with it. It’s a bit cheaper compared to EON and other cards, and faster, too.

  7. Michelle says:

I verified my PP account through BPI My E-Prepaid. Smooth and easy process :)

  8. Rubie says:

Hi. I would like to know how much do I have to load to be able to verify my paypal using payoneer?

  9. jfv says:

    Hi,

Thanks a lot for this post!
I have a question, I’m planning to have my very first purchase online, I have UnionBank Card and the denomination acct. is in Peso currency. If I am to purchase online and the price is in US dollars, will the purchase be converted to peso to sync with my existing peso acct. , or will it be an error to do so and might as well make necessary banking arrangements?
    Salamat!

  10. Maj says:

Ms. Stef G. I just want to know if I use BPI My ePrepaid (MASTERCARD) for verification. Can I also use to withdraw my funds or I need other bank account for withdrawal? too bad I recently apply for BPI Easy Savers I guess I should stick to my plan for EON Debit for My Paypal Account but it cost too much and need to pay each year. :(

  11. Mark says:

Hi Stef G! Where can I see my 4 digit code to verify my Paypal?

  12. Jan says:

Hi, RCBC’s MyWallet Card can also be another alternative.

  13. Marlane says:

Hello po! I would like to ask po which is the best Paypal account to get if you’re a freelancer? personal or premiere? Thank you po! :)

    • Stef G. says:

If you’re using PayPal only to receive payments, a personal account will do. Premiere accounts are for those who would also use them for business purposes.

      • Marlane says:

Are you using a personal account? Because I read somewhere that the personal account has higher withdrawal fees. What are the advantages and disadvantages of getting a premiere account? Thank you po! :)

        • Stef G. says:

I think that question is answered through the PayPal Help section, so you can search the site for the pros/cons of the premiere account. As far as withdrawal fees are concerned, I know there aren’t any when using a personal account. :)

          • Marlane says:

Thank you for your response. Another question, What if someone sends me money through Paypal? How can I withdraw the money? Can it be transferred to a debit card like the BPI e-Prepaid card and withdraw from any ATM?Forgive me I’m really new to this. I just got accepted to a job, and I don’t know anything about banks or Paypal.

  14. Alex says:

Hi! I just want to share my experience with eon paypal. July 26 2012 9am I applied for an eon online. I choose Renaissance Branch in Ortigas since that’s the nearest branch to me. Confirmation was sent to me immediately via SMS a minute after applying online that I could already pick up the card that same day. I went to Unionbank at around 1pm, provided 2 Valid ID’s and TIN number. Got my eon card at around 1:15pm July 26, 2012. Before I left, the teller told me that the card will be activated after 24 hours. So I waited for 24 hours.

July 27, 2012 2pm, I went to the Paypal site and tried to verify my Paypal account using EON. Paypal accepted the card. I called the Unionbank Hotline to ask for the Expuse number. I entered the Expuse number to my account on Paypal and got verified. My paypal is verified on July 27, 2012 2:15pm.

Important: Make sure that your name and address on your EON account exactly match your name and address on your Paypal account. If not, Paypal wont let you verify your account.

Great info.. Already bookmarked this site…
i only got 1 question, can i use bpi express teller international for verifying PayPal account ?
ive read that you can use it to withdraw funds.. i really need to set up a account for paypal for my home based work…

  16. Adelle says:

Hi Steph, thank you for sharing this. I am currently using EON and have not had problems with it. Not until my most recent transaction. I withdrew my PayPal funds Thursday and no credit was made until today. Is this pretty normal for them?

    • Stef G. says:

By recent you mean you’ve withdrawn money using EON before? If this just happened recently there must be something wrong on their end that caused the problem.

      • Alex says:

Check ou Unionbank Facebook official page, most of the people who are commenting there have not received their funds yet. Same as you, they withdraw their funds last thursday. I withdraw mine yesterday morning, completed by evening and reflected on my eon this afternoon.

  17. Kathleencerezo says:

    • Stef G. says:

Could you provide a screenshot of the error? I followed the same procedure and it worked fine for me. Did you also type in the correct expiry date?

      • Kathleencerezo says:

Hi.. gumana na po sya now. ang sabi po kunin ko daw po ung 4 digits? paano po ung pag eemail sa myeprepaid@bpi.com.ph.. anu po ilalagay ko? just my 16 digit number and name or i need to make a letter of request? thank you po..salamat

  18. Mik says:

It’s a good news, I already got my eon card and yes it is easier when you do the application online. However, I have another registration problem. I’m signing up a Paypal account but I got this error message, “Please enter a valid telephone number.” I input my cellphone no. +63935******* because I don’t have a landline. Should I use my friend’s landline number just to finish the transaction? Thank you for helping. :D

    Dear Ms. Taboada:

Thank you for providing us the information.

However, we regret to inform you that we are unable to process your
request. Upon checking, your email address is not indicated in our system
which forms part of our verification process. Please proceed to your branch
of account and inform them to indicate your email address in the system.

    We apologize for the inconvenience.

    Sincerely,

    Ben Salamat
    Customer Service Officer

nag request ako 3 times pero wala parin anu dapat kong gawin at pwede paba mawala ang limited sa paypal ko please help me poh

    • Stef G. says:

Based on the response, your email address isn’t registered in their database and thus can’t determine if you are a client of RCBC. You might want to sort this out first before verifying your PayPal account. The limits on your account can only be lifted if you’ve verified it with a credit/debit card.

    • Jef says:

well i think need mo apply online pra maview mo ung transcations with ur card…

kasi kung aasa ka sa reply ng mga yan manually eh aabutin k ng syam syam….

  25. creselda says:

    Good morning Ms. Stef,
Well, I’m a new PayPal subscriber. I opened an account on PayPal so i can receive money from my friend.
I have my bank account on my PayPal , may i ask if there’s still need to add credit card to my account in order to withdraw the money ? I’m having a hard time with this . I don’t understand.
Whenever i withdraw it , message will be on the screen saying there was an error that i must link my debit or credit card to lift the limit i want to withdraw . how’s that ?
    please help me

    • Stef G. says:

Hi, creselda. You’ll need to add a credit card to your PayPal account to lift your withdrawal limits, which is why you’re getting errors when trying to withdraw your funds to a bank account.

TFP has a free ebook/PDF guide on how to set up and withdraw from PayPal. You can claim it by signing up here: http://eepurl.com/oFrFn

      • creselda says:

I have my card (which is for remittance from metro bank) .. can i use that ?
        i don’t really get it .
i can get the money ? even if i have my bank account ?
well when i was withdrawing 500 (‘cos that was the limit) it says that it was greater than my withdrawal limit and says that i must add credit card .

        • Alex says:

          Creselda,

You need to verify your Paypal account in order to lift the limit of your withdrawal. I would suggest you use EON card since it’s the most fastest way to verify your Paypal account. Of course you can use other cards as well indicated in this article.

  26. creselda says:

    i mean *can’t

  27. Rachel says:

    Hi Stef!

I’m in search of which account should I open so I can it use to withdraw funds from my paypal account. (I am Very new to freelancing) I’m choosing from Bpi eprepaid and unionbank’s Eon. Tried to register on Eon but it said needed a SSS/UMID/GSIS number which I don’t have yet since I’m still a student. I haven’t tried to register for bpi yet. But which one do you prefer suggesting me on which is better to use on the two and maybe other alternatives. :)

    • Stef G. says:

      Hi Rachel,

I’m a big fan of BPI ePrepaid Mastercar because the application requirements are very minimal and it allows me to purchase stuff off/online. If you’re a BPI user, you’re better off using the ePrepaid card since you can enroll it to your BPI Express Online account. Of course, if you need a credit/debit card and a savings account for your funds, you can use Unionbank’s EON card since it functions both ways.

      • Rachel says:

        Hey Stef!

Thanks for the reply. :) Found out that there’s no Unionbank near my location LOL. Will just open both an ePrepaid and a Bpi easy saver account to use as separate savings account. :) Anyway, I’d like to ask what the requirements are? So I can prepare them ahead of time :) (Sorry very new to transactions :D )

Hope you keep posting articles like this, it’s very informative especially for newbies like me :)

  28. Ryan says:

    Hi Stef,

Just want to ask if i can withdraw money from PayPal to my Metro Bank ATM without verifying my PayPal account because I don’t have an credit/debit card.
I already enter my Metro bank card and it show on my profile “METROPOLITAN BANK AND TRUST CO
x-6819 Philippines – Primary” is this already activated?

    Thanks

    • Stef G. says:

Ryan, nope. That’s just an indication that you’ve added a bank account. From my experience, you really can’t withdraw funds from a PH Paypal account without full verification.

      • ryan says:

can i use smart money card for me to be verify?
If successfully verified, can i use now the metrobank atm for the withdrawal?

        thanks for the reply

  29. Alex says:

    Hello Stef,

I want to suggest that you write an article about withdrawing Paypal funds on holidays. It seems that there are many freelancers especially new ones who aren’t really informed about delays of withdrawing funds on holidays. Ang daming hate comments na nababasa ko sa FB page ng mga Banks like sa UnionBank pag holidays dahil delay ang funds, bank employees are not working, etc. Kawawa naman mga bank employees and also para mainform na din ang ibang mga freelancers. :)

    • Stef G. says:

      Hi Alex,

Thanks for the suggestion! I think the best way to tackle this problem would be to list down the yearly holidays for both US and Philippines, since the only advice would be to not withdraw your funds 2-3 days before a non-working holiday. I’ll come up with the post by the end of the week.

      Thanks again!
      - Stef

  30. jfv says:

    Hi again!
Care to share which of these cards or any card account offered by banks you know of, is the best way to grow a US dollar account where you are allowed to encash in dollars, or use for transactions when traveling overseas?
Thanks so much for any heads up you may have for this concern.

  31. Brian says:

Hi Stef. This is off topic, but I was just wondering… If an oDesk contractor applies for a BPI credit card, required sa application ang “last 2 payslips,” so ano ang pwedeng magamit na “payslip” ng oDesk contractor?

    • Stef G. says:

Hi Brian, when applying for my BPI credit card I had to submit copies of my latest income tax returns statement to qualify. I’m a registered tax payer and so am able to submit all of the requirements for one.

  32. Te says:

    • ph1 says:

need mo ng credit card (CC) kasi sa philippines di pwede kumuha ng pera and paypal from your bank account (BA) pwede lang sila mag deposit ng cash into your bank account kapag naka tanggap ka ng pera into ur paypal account. So need mo mag register ng CC para makapagbayad ka using your PayPal account. =)

I applied for the ePrepaid MasterCard online immediately after seeing this. I am elated that there’s an easy way to get a MasterCard that can be used to verify a PayPal account. I just left my regular job to try freelancing in oDesk, and I’m currently setting up needed accounts, in 7 days I will have my MasterCard. :)

However, how do I withdraw the funds earned from my oDesk gigs, I mean, how do I get the cash out of the ePrepaid card? Because I just found out that you can’t use the card to withdraw cash. Help, please?

    • Stef G. says:

      meow,

Yup, you can’t withdraw your ePrepaid funds as how you would with a normal ATM savings account. It functions as a regular credit card for offline/online purchases.

    • Te says:

You can add your Savings Account in oDesk to withdraw your earnings thru LFT (Local Funds Transfer).

Dun papasok si BPI My ePrepaid. Di lang ako sigurado kung gano katagal process pero alam ko mas mabilis sa LFT.

  39. hello ms stef g,

metrobank also has a prepaid mastercard. anyone tried adding that sa paypal? i emailed metrobank custcare and they said that it can’t be linked to paypal. but who knows, custcare can oftentimes be not aware of such stuff.

  41. mike says:

follow up post, an update actually, metrobank debit card can’t be linked sa paypal. i tried it and was charged P40.62. the charge was generated for paypal to check if the card exist. metrobank direct acknowledges the transaction as Paypal, but no EXPUSE number is displayed.

  42. Garry says:

Hi there, RCBC-”Mercury Drug” MyWallet VISA Debit Card can help. I opened this account last January for 110 pesos (100 served as my initial fund to verify Paypal while the 10 pesos is the opening fee). I tried it and everything worked well for me. I was able to verify my Paypal in 1 day and withdrew my funds using this debit card in 2 1/2 days without experiencing any problem. And I was surprised that I was only charged a mimimal fee of 10 pesos to withdraw funds from Paypal, plus the 50 pesos fee deducted by Paypal for my withdrawal that was less than 7 thousand (check out the Paypal policy). I don’t know if there was an error, but yes I was only charged 10 pesos by RCBC since I added this Debit Card as my “Bank account” (and not as Credit Card). I saw a lot of comments from other blogs about the problems they experienced using MyWallet but I think RCBC has already noted those, that’s why everything seems to work well now.

  43. Garry says:

And btw, I also used my BPI Express Teller to withdraw funds from Paypal and I was charged 150 pesos plus the 50 pesos charged by Paypal for withdrawal.

thanks for this! i’m not comfortable with unionbank and I didn’t know that BPI has their own “prepaid credit card”- and a hassle free online application process (w/ only 1 valid ID requirement upon card pickup). Just sent my application; thanks again!

Thanks for a very informative post. I applied for the My ePrepaid card. As soon as I claim it, I’ll follow these steps.

Hi Stef and to everyone reading this informative post.
I just want to ask if you can apply for EON card if you are unemployed? I mean would they ask for proof of employment when pick the card up? What can you suggest should I put on the occupation/nature of work example if I say freelancer what would I put on the the other slot to be filled out like the name of business and address of it.

.:. I would greatly appreciate if you can make a tutorial of filling out several application forms especially for the unemployed ones. Yep it sounds kinda odd and funny since normally filling out forms would just be a piece of cake but it’s just something that I find it hard to get around. I hope you can help me out and others with the same case as mine.
